Schija Ringel came to Berlin and made his name in the Scheunenviertel, the Jewish garment district. He married his housekeeper, Fiege Kaufler, originally from Krakow.
Herman was their second child, born in 1888. In 1906, at age 21, Herman registered his German citizenship. In 1914, he was called into service for the German army in World War I.
After the war, Herman established two companies in the men's outerwear trade. He married Elly Wohlgemuth and together they had a daughter Helga in 1924.
