It's 1944 and World War II is still on. Flora had enlisted shortly after Pearl Harbour. Charles had been drafted after receiving multiple deferments for working at the B-24 Bomber plant at Willow Run.
She saw him across the room - he was sitting at the counter and she was in a booth at the Pepsi Cola Canteen in Washington DC.
Charles was alone, enjoying a hot dog and Pepsi.
Flora was with her Best Frient Minnie.
Flora turned to her friend and said "That is the man I'm going to marry."
As the story goes, Flora walked up to Charles and introduced herself by hitting him in the stomach with her elbow.
His hot dog is said to have flown across the counter.
They were married on August 23, 1947 in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
They were married for just shy of 47 years and were the parents of 4 children.
