Devorah and I lived at the same time in Kew Gardens Hills, NY and went to the same John Bowne HS but we didn't know each other. Almost 30 years after high school we were living in different states and were both single again after a previous marriage. On Jdate I kept on noticing that this nice looking woman kept on viewing my profile. Her profile was appealing but she lived in the Berkshires - not exactly geographically desirable.
I wrote Devorah a one line email on JDate. "Why are all the pretty ones in the Berkshires." Devorah wrote me back what I call a "megillah" and she said that she was coming to Long Island the next week. I asked her to dinner for Monday night, and we met at Mims in Roslyn. We hit it off immediately and saw each other nearly every night for the next 2 weeks as she extended her stay in Long Island.
After a wonderful day with Devorah's family in Israel I made up my mind I wanted to propose although I wasn't prepared and didn't have a ring. It was my birthday. We were sitting in the lobby of the King David Hotel and I rushed her back into the room. I took her next to the window overlooking the Old City and said that I would like to give myself a birthday present today. "The best present for me would be to have you as my wife," and I proceded to ask her to marry me. She cried and didn't answer. I said "so will you?"
Steven Solomon Turner and Devorah Ribak were married in Temple Torah on 21 MAY 2011.
